Defence Industry
Gears are considered very important for the performance of almost all
of the crucial weapons systems. The applications of the different gears and
gear related equipments can be justified in the defence industry either
through any one of the following way:
- May be used as components of the different types of devices which are
used in manufacturing of a particular weapon system.
- May be used as components of the defence system itself.
Actuator gear systems and subsystems are used in different
applications of the fighter planes. These applications include: in the
landing gear system and in the motion control system of the fighter flights
to make the motion more precise, predictable and sound.
Some specialized bevel gear sections can cater the specific defense
industrial requirements. These bevel gears are of high quality straight and
associated to the spiral bevel gears. Large size reduction gears are used to
operate navel vessels.
Applications of Gears in Defence Industry
Casing
Casing is the process which is frequently used in the defence industry. To
make the oil passage integral with the casing, mini core technology is used.
This casing consists a single output gear box usually having the operating
power of 185KW and speed of 16810 rpm. The output variations from 6000 rpm
to 8000 rpm. This mini-core technology is used with the aircraft-mounting
accessory gearbox along with a thin walled magnesium alloy casing. The other
things which are used along with this gearbox are an inbuilt mini core oil
passages and an integral oil reservoir.
Epicyclic Gear Box
The specialty for which the epicyclic gearboxes are used in the defence
industry lies in their capacity of providing power maintained gear change.
For automation purpose, this gearbox is the most suitable and also this
gearbox is firmly and rigidly made. This type of gear box is used in the
torpedo because torpedo requires contra rotating concentric drive for its
operations.
Chassis & Automotive Systems (CAS)
The Chassis & Automotive Systems of the modern battle tanks comprise
running gears along with the power pack and main chassis. The running gears
comprise integrated fuel system, hydro pneumatic suspension and other
dedicated specific systems.
Automatic Transmission
Modern epicyclic gear trains which are fully compounded are used in the
automatic transmission process in different artilleries used in the defence
field. Torque converter having a bypass clutch is also used along with the
epicyclic gear trains.
