Face
gears are those type of gears which are used in transmit power in circular
motion. The power is transmitted usually at angles, which can be right angle
or concave or convex based upon your included drive angle. Face gears are
not very common in all industrial applications but the the application areas
for which these gears are highly demanded are aviation and aeronautics
industries. They are in the shape of circular disc with a ring of teeth cut
on one side. The gear teeth are tapered towards the tooth's center. The face
gears typically mate with
spur gears. They have become highly popular for their use in high power, high precision applications.
Advantages of Face Gears
- Face gear provides the transmission of drive through an angle.
- They have high strength teeth.
- Face gears have good contact geometry.
- They give high torque capability.
- Face gears help to ensure rigidity and accuracy.
Materials Used
Face gears are made from variety of materials including stainless steel,
brass, plastic, aluminum, gray iron, carbon steel & nylon.
Applications of Face Gears
Face gears are applied to a transmission for helicopters. Used for
transformation of torque and rotation between intersected axes, face gear
drives are an alternative one for a spiral bevel gear drive. Face gears are
demanded for aerospace drive system applications. Helicopters using
transmission systems depending on face gears have a higher survivability and
safety.
