Gear Mandrel
A block of metal is called as Mandrel, if other metals bend around of
it. The term mandrel normally refers to an object which is used to provide
shapes on machine works. This term also refers a tool component that is used
to provide grip for other movable tool components. In a lathe, the clamp
which is used to retain the piece of metal, plastic or wood, is a simple
example of a mandrel. The clamp (mandrel) is used in a lathe in
order to machine the material (whether it may be wood, plastic or metal) as
it is turned. Besides in lathe, mandrel is also used to hold buffing wheels,
sanding disco onto drills, circular saw blades and such kind of power
devices. Most of the mandrels are driven by using the motors but for driving
some other mandrels, attachment to a pulley driven shaft is used.
Applications/Uses of Gear Mandrel
Mandrel is a device which is used either in the following applications:
- To provide shape of machine works.
- Used as a tool components to grip or clamps materials which has to be
machined.
- Used as a tool components to grip other movable tool components.
Types of Gear Mandrel
No specific names are there for different types of mandrel. The
classifications of mandrel have been done on the basic of their
applications. The different types of mandrel have been mentioned as follows:
- Metallic shaped bar that is either inserted in an item or next to the
item which has to be bent in a certain pattern or style. Mandrel is used
during the manufacturing of bent-exhaust pipes, used in automobiles. The
smooth bending of the exhaust pipes is possible without any kinking,
creasing and collapsing is due to the mandrel. In providing shapes from
the molten glass, mandrel can be used. In jewelry industry, mandrel is
used in providing various shapes of ornaments. In jewelry manufacturing,
the goldsmith hits the gold metal by a hammer against the mandrel.
- The clamp used in a lathe to hold either the metal, wood or plastic
to be machined, is another type of mandrels. The uses of this kind of
mandrels are: in threading or rods, in making beautiful patterns on
furniture legs, in providing round or cylindrical shape on the irregular
shaped objects.
- Mandrel of this category, consists a cylinder. This cylinder is
threaded on one end and this threaded side has a washer brazed onto the
end of the threaded portion. It also hold a second washer and a screw to
clamp the circular saw blade. Mandrel of this category is used to hold
buffing wheels, sanding disco onto drills, circular saw blades and such
kind of power devices.
