Ring Gears

Ring gears are important type of gears which are widely used in automobile differentials for power transfer. Ring gears are commonly used in the steering system of cars to transform the rotary motion of the steering wheel to the
side to side motion in the wheels. Ring gears are one of the simplest
performance changes that can be performed on a vehicle. The basic feature of ring gear is that there is a propeller shaft pinion which transmits power to a large ring
gear that has teeth cut on the inside surface of the ring. These gears help to retain power when bigger tires are put on a vehicle. The torque can be increased by a ratio change when there is higher take off power from a dead start. Ring gears are well designed mechanism that saves time and effort. The two prominent varieties of these gear are mentioned under:
Internal Ring Gears
Internal ring gears are the gears having the series of cogs or mesh teeth
present on the inner circumference of the gear rim. The internal ring gears
are primarily used for gear actuators and planetary transmissions. These
gears are designed to mainly cater to the need of automobiles. They are
considered one of the heavy-duty and tough varieties of gears, which are
unaffected by abrasion and corrosion.
External Ring Gears
An external ring gears, as the name suggests, is a kind of ring gear that
possesses the teeth on the outer girth of the gear cylinder or rim. Being a
type of ring gear, External ring gear also find their prime application in automobiles. The basic difference between internal and external ring gears is that of their very appearance. While the internal ring gears have the meshing teeth on the inner circumference of the gear rim, the external ring gears possess them on the outer.
Materials Used for Fabrication
A wide variety of materials are used in making ring gears like Steel,
Staiinless Steel, Heat Treated Stainless Steel, Carbon Steel, Chromium Steel
, Manganese Steel, Molybdenum Steel, Nickel-Chromium Steel, Aluminum,
Bronze, Cast Iron, Plastic, Nylon etc.
Applications
Besides the automotive industry, ring Gears are also used in aerospace and
satellite applications. They are frequently used in applications where it is
necessary to convert torque. In other words, they are designed for common
automotive flexplate and flywheel applications as well as for torque
converter applications. They are precision engineered auto-components, used
to deliver required performance levels. These gears are used in various areas
like Aerospace, Defense, Industrial, Medical Devices, Instrumentation,
Military, Oil & Gas and Government.
