Winch Gears

Types Application

Winch GearsWinch gears are the gears having thick and strong teeth, often used in a heavy loads lifting equipment named winch. The main functionality of the winch gears lies in the conversion of high-speed, low-force input of the rotating handle or from electric motor (whatever may be the case) into a relatively low-speed, high torque output of the lifting drum. These tooth forms are quite different from those found in the automobile gearboxes and in power transmission applications.

The winch gears have a comparatively short lifespan. A standard winch gear may turn only a few thousand times in its entire life. But, there is no fault of the gear in it. The short working life of these gears is due to the kind of applications for which they are meant. The winch gears are, however, not subjected to overheating as they never run too fast to become hot.

Primary Varieties/Types of Winch Gears
Winch gears are basically of three types, which are as mentioned under:
Application of Winch Gears
Winch gears are one of the most useful varieties or types of gears that are available at present. Care should be taken that ratchet not get engaged when the winch gear is turning, as it may cause the gear to malfunction. In general, winch gears are highly efficient and commonly found their application in boats (mostly sail boats); automobiles (in winches installed on them); and in pulleys (for lifting heavy weights).
