Winch Gears

Winch
gears are the gears having thick and strong teeth, often used in a heavy
loads lifting equipment named winch. The main functionality of the winch
gears lies in the conversion of high-speed, low-force input of the rotating
handle or from electric motor (whatever may be the case) into a relatively
low-speed, high torque output of the lifting drum. These tooth forms are
quite different from those found in the automobile gearboxes and in power
transmission applications.
The winch gears have a comparatively short lifespan. A standard winch gear
may turn only a few thousand times in its entire life. But, there is no
fault of the gear in it. The short working life of these gears is due to the
kind of applications for which they are meant. The winch gears are, however,
not subjected to overheating as they never run too fast to become hot.
Primary Varieties/Types of Winch Gears
Winch gears are basically of three types, which are as mentioned under:
- Planetary Winch Gears:
It is one of the most popular and economical variety of the off-road
winches. Strength, high torque load resistance, and smooth operation are
the characteristic features of the planetary winch gears. These gears
require a braking system to hold the load. This particular variety of
winch gear is considered ideal for ATVs and other vehicles with confined
mounting space. These gears have a transfer efficiency of about 65%.
- Worm Winch Gears:
These gears are distinguished by their absolute tolerance. Worm winch
gears also have self-braking mechanism, which eliminates the need for a
separate braking system for them. But, these gears lag behind the
planetary winch gears in mechanical efficiency. The average transfer
efficiency rate of the worm winch gears varies from 35% to 40%.
- Spur Winch Gears:
Spur winch gear is a highly efficient winch gear type. This gear
possesses a fast line speed and is very reliable. The slight problem
with this gear is of the space requirement, as it needs relatively more
space, which makes it unsuitable to be mounted on some vehicles. In
order to install them on vehicles with limited space, certain
modifications are to be made in the gear accordingly. These gears also
require a braking system, as is the case with planetary winch gears.
Their transfer efficiency is 75% approx.
Application of Winch Gears
Winch gears are one of the most useful varieties or types of gears that are
available at present. Care should be taken that ratchet not get engaged when
the winch gear is turning, as it may cause the gear to malfunction. In
general, winch gears are highly efficient and commonly found their
application in boats (mostly sail boats); automobiles (in winches installed
on them); and in pulleys (for lifting heavy weights).
